How do I make techno music?

I absolutely LOVE techno music. I really wanna learn how to make it but I don’t have the money for all the cool equipment that they had. Is there anything I can download for free online?? I tried one site and downloaded something, I forget what it was though, but it was this big black and silver thing with buttons EVERYWHERE! I couldn’t understand it. Please help.

You need a ‘digital audio workstation’

You will also need to get a better souind card for your computer. M audio do some slightly-better-than-consumer-level ones. TYhis would be good: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/m-audio-audiophile-2496-pro-soundcard-pc_W0QQitemZ130272243867QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_ComputerComponents_SoundCards?hash=item130272243867&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1298|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3

Audacity is free. You can use that to assemble a song with samples and loops from a site that offers them for free (there’s lots out there, sites like this: http://www.freesound.org/packsViewSingle.php?id=837 )

Learning to use a DAW is a steep learning curve – but they aren’t complecated things and once you get over how daunting it is just to start you’ll pick it up faster and faster…

The big problem with Audacity is that it doesn’t support midi.

Ideally you would want to get a cheap(ish) trigger keyboard – one that just sends a midi signal and doesn’t have any sounds in itself – and then link that up with a DAW with a sample module (there’s lots of these out there – ’sampletank’ is good. So is ‘hypersonic 2′.

Cubase has very good midi editing facilities. It’s expensive though. (Although pirated copies of cubase sx3 are evrywhere, torrents, emule, everywhere, hypersonic 2 and sampletank 2′ can be downloaded as cracked versions too.) An example of how you do this sort of thing: You play a midi keyboard connected to your computer via USB (or you could enter the notes directly on a midi score editor and not use a keyboard at all) and that is connected to a virtual instrument (say hypersonic 2). You record some midi and it appears as notes on the ’score editor’. You can play those same notes through any instrument selected in hypersonic – from drums to keyboards to anything. You can move them around, change the volume of them, change the sustain. Using midi you could create any element that you wanted in your track…

It will be daunting at first but you’ll get the hang of it. Youtube has loads and loads of tutorial videos.

That you want to make techno music is great. You avoid the need for a super expensive sound card and expensive outboard preamps to record vocals/guitars/drums/stuff

Get a mixer and synthesiser and experiment away.
