Salaries and Taxes
Raising teacher salaries is a definite start in the right direction. Relieving much of the tax burden levied on families so that there is not only a moral benefit to marriage but not a financial drawback to creating a family. In an effort to save the students at failing schools, direct intervention must be enacted quickly and it must encompass all areas from home life to school life. Attempts must be made to assist young people not only in their studies but programs must be instituted that address the social issues that affect learning and performance as well. In the final analysis, no change can be as significant as that of a change in parent attitude and values. By parents focusing more attention on their child’s education, we can begin to see benefits beyond what any government agency could ever provide. Parents who take an active interest in their children’s education have children who do better. So, before we enact sweeping reform and spend billions of dollars that will soon be unaccounted for, why not start with what is free and most effective?

Planted Monitored and Watered
In the case of our students, if the teacher finds a student insufficient in the areas of self-esteem and motivation, it becomes incumbent upon the teacher to pour into the student the vital nutrients of encouragement, support and enthusiasm. After the seed is firmly planted on a solid foundation in quality soil, it must be monitored to protect it from the various insects, weeds and weather conditions that could potentially harm it. As the gardener, the teacher must monitor multiple aspects of the learning process through observational learning. The teacher must remain vigilant to identify any outside influence that may inhibit proper cognitive development.

Does Educational Effort Pay Off
Each of these individual characteristics are detrimental however, the combination of any two or more, leave the adolescent with whom they apply at a disadvantage. The interaction of traits active in a young person’s life at the point of transition from middle school to junior high school and high school can be detrimental to a positive adaptive adjustment to their school environment.
Ethnicity is a vital component in the make up of a highly at-risk adolescent. Steinberg, Dornbusch and Brown (year) illustrate how among the African-American and Hispanic youth studied, they found that a majority of them held the belief that “educational effort does not pay off.” This belief was not consistent with White students or Asian-American students.

Testing Observations
G attended all sessions except one (due to medical problems). She was on time to every appointment, and she willingly participated in all tasks. She wore her glasses sporadically during visual tasks, reporting that she was having a difficult time adjusting to her new “progressive” lenses. This did not appear to compromise her test performance.
G’s speech was often disjointed, tangential, and had a pressured quality to it. She changed topics frequently. Before testing began and between subtests, she often needed to be redirected to the task at hand; but once redirected, she was able to maintain her focus very well.

Not Your Traditional War
Rather than a tactical war that countries fight, a war was brewing in American society in the 1960s and beyond. The common enemy was not the Germans this time rather it was the established rule of injustice cast down upon the masses of African Americans and Hispanics with out proper representation. Huntington fails to fully describe the affects of the years of torment on the minority people African Americans in particular. Recall from the beginning that an identity is best born when individuals share a common history and common memories of heroes and villains. What do you think about this?
